The collection contains a manuscript poem "To Miss M. Cummins." Literary correspondence includes a letter of thanks for suggestions on organizing writing time; offers to publish articles in "The Home Weekly" and a new newspaper of W.E. Hilton & Co.; discuss proofreading and corrections, and the subtitle to "El Fureidîs." Letters from readers praise her books "The Lamplighter" and "Mabel Vaughan" for their plot, characterizations, and morality. Personal correspondence discusses a trip to England including a visit to the Crystal Palace; debts of an acquaintance; and sermons of Horace Bushnell. There are also three letters, 1859, from an unidentified sailor in the Indian Ocean to a New England sweetheart.

Horace Bushnell was born in Bantam, Connecticut on April 14, 1802. He was educated at Yale (B.A., 1827; M.A., 1830; B.D., 1833), and received degrees from Wesleyan University (D.D., 1842), Harvard (S.T.D., 1852) and Yale (LL.D., 1871). He served as pastor of North Church, Hartford, CT from 1833-1859.
